New Strategy....

Spring is a busy time of year for us. There is a lot to be done around the farm. Diabetes does seem to be pushed back right now, only because there are so many other pressing needs. The pump situation is still in a holding pattern. We've managed with MDI, but we seem to be getting many lows still. We wish there was a rhyme or reason to his numbers, but all too often we scratch our heads and say "Where did that come from?" Diabetes is definitely a disease that can drive a person crazy if they let it!!

A couple weeks ago I talked about our "junk food nights", and the horrible results from that evening. Well, I decided I didn't want that to happen again. So last night I did it....I brought my big 'ol honkin' scale with me!!! Yep, I sure did!! I hid it in my "project" bag.....(I'm always carrying some sort of bag with either quilting or knitting)....so it wasn't too obvious until I whipped it out to measure the chips for J.J.

I really wasn't too intimidated to use it in front of others......I usually don't care much what people think if I'm resolved that this is the very best for us or our family......so I just did what I always do at home. Not a big deal. I actually showed a person how I use it and they ended up measuring out their chips that way. I told them I actually measure all my kids snacky items with the scale now......saves us money......and their waistline!!! We used to just set the bag on the counter until it was all gone....now we get at least 3 snack times out of a bag!!

Oooops......way off topic.....

So how did his numbers look last night? FANTASTIC!!! Because I had the scale I wasn't guessing at all. Sometimes by the time the bags of chips get to these deals they are in crumbs, or at least not normal "chip" size, so it was good to have exact ounces!! No lows, no highs.....just right!!

So a new strategy......take a scale with me!!!

Congratulations on the "just right" numbers. That scale is like a miracle, isn't it? Hope it keeps working. That's great!

Hang in there, its never easy. Caroline has had diabetes for 4 1/2 years and we still get the 'where did THIS number come from' event.

The only thing I can say is don't be scared to go with your gut. If you're getting REGULAR lows, don't be shy about tweaking back the basal or tweaking back the carb ratio for boluses.

We have different ratios for different times of day - so if they are at a similar time every day (like if JJ is running around in the afternoon before dinner), you could shut one thing down every day at a certain time and see how that works.

Good luck!
